The three-day Catandungan Agro-Industrial and Technology Fair held at the Virac Youth Center on October 22-24 was a huge success in terms of sales and viewers attendance, with a daily average of 300 visitors.
Kicking off from an estimated crowd of more than 600 persons during the opening day, the fair was able to post combined sales of P377,286.00, 16% more than last year’s 5-day total sales of P325,001.00. The revenue came from the 10 municipal booths that sell OTOPs and agricultural products, seven individual firms (handicraft, food and garden plants, therapeutic massage), four bayong manufacturers, and eight institutional booths.
Top sellers were the kinis or crabs and sugarcane juice of Panganiban LGU, at P76,575.00, earning it an award during the closing ceremony where the Pandan LGU won for the best-dressed booth. Both winners received each a certificate of recognition and P3,000.00 as prize.
The other participants in the fair were: the LGUs of Baras, Bagamanoc, Bato, Caramoran, San Andres, San Miguel, Viga, and Virac, Terestian Craft, Summit Handmade Paper, Lydia’s Native Products, SOLMARF, Nayvee’s Food Products, Catanduanes Deli, Nelia’s Food Products, Catanduanes Bazaar, Island Accupressure, JMT Enterprises, A. Teves Enterprises, Floranza’s Garden Products, NGM Handicraft, Nilda Traquena Furniture and Handicraft and the Buyo Caragumoy Product Producers Asociation. The institutional booths included the DPWH, which featured the solid waste management system and Sunrise chicken; TESDA/CSHCI with the Catanduanes Therapist Association; DAR, which exhibited products from its assisted agrarian reform communities; OPAg/DA-ROS with the Rural Improvement Clubs and K-4; BFAR;DOST, and; CSC which showed its recent research and extension projects.
Meanwhile, thru the Catandungan Agro-Industrial and Technology Fair, the once lowly "bayong" has established its position as the latest "hit" product, earning warm acceptance both from local buyers and visitors alike.
Launched on September 24, 2009 at the Capitol Lobby during the Provincial OTOP Assembly, bayong products (from simple packaging boxes/bags to more elaborately-made fashion bags) continue to excite buyers. At the fair alone, bayong products posted P47,875.00 in sales. Bayong producers at the fair were NGM Handicraft of Ms. Nanette Molina, Nilda Traquena Furniture and Handicraft of Ms. Nilda Traquena, Tucao Women’s Association of Caramoran, Buyo Caragumoy Product Producers Association of Virac and the Pandan Women Weavers Association.
